Description

A decadent treat for chocolate lovers.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 8 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • Chocolate shavings or sprinkles (optional)
  • Fresh berries (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk until well combined.
  3. Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed for about 2 minutes until smooth. Carefully stir in the boiling water until the batter is well combined.
  4. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  5. In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until it begins to simmer. Remove from heat.
  6. Place the chopped chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Pour the hot cream over the chocolate and let it sit for 5 minutes. Add the butter and stir until smooth and glossy.
  7. Once the cakes are completely cool, level the tops with a knife if necessary.
  8. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of ganache on top, then place the second cake layer on top of the first.
  9. Pour the remaining ganache over the top of the cake, allowing it to drip down the sides. Use a spatula to spread it evenly if needed.
  10. Optionally, decorate the top of the cake with chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or fresh berries.
  11. Slice the cake and serve it to your guests.
