Description

Chocolate Layer Cake is a rich and indulgent dessert perfect for celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes until well combined.
  4. Carefully stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thin.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from the pans and transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy.
  9. Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing on low speed until combined.
  10. Pour in the milk and vanilla extract, then beat on high speed for about 3 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy.
  11. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top.
  12. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining frosting.
  13. Optionally, decorate with chocolate shavings or sprinkles.
