- 8 ounces elbow macaroni
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 3 cups milk
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the elbow macaroni according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the flour and cook for about 1-2 minutes until golden. Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue cooking, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and bubbles. Remove from heat and stir in the cheddar and mozzarella cheeses until melted and smooth. Add garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper to taste.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked macaroni with the cheese sauce, stirring until all the pasta is well coated.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Pour the mac and cheese mixture into the dish. In a small bowl, mix the breadcrumbs with olive oil and Parmesan cheese. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the mac and cheese.
- Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley before serving.
