Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Edible decorations (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Gradually add the milk and vanilla extract, mixing until combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Remove from the oven and let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy.
  10. Gradually add the powdered sugar and heavy cream, mixing until smooth and fluffy. Add the vanilla extract and mix until well combined.
  11. If desired, add food coloring to achieve your preferred color and mix until evenly colored.
  12. Once the cakes are completely cool, level the tops with a knife if necessary.
  13. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of frosting on top. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
  14. Use edible decorations to enhance the appearance of your cake as desired.
