- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
- Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with milk. Mix until just combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Smooth the tops with a spatula.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
- To make the frosting, beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and milk, mixing until smooth and fluffy. Stir in vanilla extract.
- If desired, divide the frosting and add food coloring to create different shades.
- Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top, then add the second layer.
- Use the remaining frosting to cover the top and sides of the cake. Decorate as desired.
