Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with milk. Mix until just combined.
  6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Smooth the tops with a spatula.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  9. To make the frosting, beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and milk, mixing until smooth and fluffy. Stir in vanilla extract.
  10. If desired, divide the frosting and add food coloring to create different shades.
  11. Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top, then add the second layer.
  12. Use the remaining frosting to cover the top and sides of the cake. Decorate as desired.
