- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the penne pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente, about 8-10 minutes. Drain and set aside, reserving a little pasta water.
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes until translucent. Stir in the minced garlic and red pepper flakes, cooking for an additional minute until fragrant.
- Pour in the tomato sauce and bring to a gentle simmer. Cook for about 5 minutes, then reduce heat to low and stir in the heavy cream. Let it simmer for another 5 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
- Add the cooked penne pasta to the skillet, tossing gently to coat with the sauce. Stir in the grated Parmesan cheese, and season with salt and pepper to taste. If the sauce is too thick, add a splash of reserved pasta water.
- Plate the pasta and garnish with fresh chopped basil leaves. Serve hot and enjoy!
