Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 4 medium potatoes thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1.5 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 0.5 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 0.5 cup beef broth or water
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 0.5 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 0.25 cup milk optional, for creaminess
  • Fresh parsley for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • large skillet
  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Cooking spray or oil
  • knife
  • cutting board
  • Aluminum foil

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or olive oil.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, heat olive oil. Brown the ground beef for about 5-7 minutes, breaking apart with a spoon as it cooks. Drain excess fat if needed.
  3. Add onions and garlic to the skillet and saute until soft and translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Spread the cooked ground beef mixture evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  5. Layer thinly sliced potatoes (about 1/8-inch thick) on top of the beef. Season with salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and paprika.
  6. Sprinkle shredded cheddar and grated Parmesan cheese over the potatoes.
  7. Pour beef broth (or water) slowly along the inside edges of the dish to keep potatoes moist while baking. Optionally drizzle with milk for extra creaminess.
  8. Cover the casserole with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  9. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until potatoes are fork-tender and cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  10. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired. Let rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Always brown ground beef until well browned for best flavor. Slice potatoes thin and uniform (1/8-inch thick) for even cooking. Don't skip adding liquid - casserole will dry out without it. Let casserole rest for a few minutes after baking for easier serving. Can prepare ahead and store in fridge overnight before baking.
