Method
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, yeast, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.
- In another bowl, mix warmed milk, melted butter, and eggs. Stir until well blended.
- Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms. Add mixed dried fruit and orange zest.
- Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough, turn it out onto a floured surface, and divide into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball.
- Place the shaped buns on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover, and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the buns for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
- Prepare the cross mixture by mixing 1/2 cup of flour with 1/2 cup of water to create a thick paste. Pipe the mixture on top of each bun after baking.
- For the glaze, heat apricot jam with 1 tablespoon of water until melted. Brush over the buns as soon as they come out of the oven.
Notes
Hot cross buns are a traditional Easter treat, but they can be enjoyed year-round. Customize with chocolate chips or different dried fruits for a unique twist.
