Dough Ingredients
  • 4 cups All-purpose flour Provides structure for the buns.

  • 1/2 teaspoon Allspice Brings a unique spice blend.
  • 1 cup Whole milk Warmed, keeps the dough moist.
  • 1/4 cup Unsalted butter Melted, adds richness.
  • 2 large Eggs Provide moisture and help bind the ingredients.
  • 1 cup Mixed dried fruit Adds sweetness and texture.
  • 1 zest Orange Adds a refreshing citrus flavor.
Cross Mixture
  • 1/2 cup All-purpose flour For the cross on top.
  • 1/2 cup Water To create a thick paste for the cross.
Glaze
  • 1/4 cup Apricot jam For glazing the buns.
  • 1 tablespoon Water To melt the apricot jam.

Method
 

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, yeast, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.
  2. In another bowl, mix warmed milk, melted butter, and eggs. Stir until well blended.
  3. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms. Add mixed dried fruit and orange zest.
  4. Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough, turn it out onto a floured surface, and divide into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball.
  6. Place the shaped buns on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover, and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the buns for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Prepare the cross mixture by mixing 1/2 cup of flour with 1/2 cup of water to create a thick paste. Pipe the mixture on top of each bun after baking.
  9. For the glaze, heat apricot jam with 1 tablespoon of water until melted. Brush over the buns as soon as they come out of the oven.

Notes

Hot cross buns are a traditional Easter treat, but they can be enjoyed year-round. Customize with chocolate chips or different dried fruits for a unique twist.
