Method
- Activate the yeast by mixing warm milk with active dry yeast and letting it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and orange zest. Stir until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough, turn it out onto a floured surface, and roll it into a 24-inch long rope. Form into a circle and pinch the ends together. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover, and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the dough with beaten egg and decorate with candied fruits and sliced almonds. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
- Let the cake cool on a wire rack. If desired, mix cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract for a filling and spread inside once cooled.
- Slice and serve the Kings' Cake, sharing with family and friends.
