Ingredients
  

For the Dough
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
For the Topping
  • 1 egg beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1/2 cup candied fruits (such as cherries, oranges, and lemon)
  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds
  • 1 small figurine (optional, for tradition)
  • 1 small dried bean (optional, for tradition)

Method
 

  1. Activate the yeast by combining warm milk and active dry yeast in a small bowl. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  3. Make a well in the dry mixture and add the activated yeast mixture, softened butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and orange zest. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and shape it into a large oval ring. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  7. Tuck the figurine and dried bean into the dough from the bottom.
  8. Cover the shaped dough with a cloth and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  9. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  10. Brush the top of the dough with the beaten egg and decorate with candied fruits and sliced almonds.
  11. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown. Let cool on a wire rack.
