Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk together until well mixed.
  3. Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix on medium speed for about 2 minutes until smooth.
  4. Carefully stir in the boiling water. The batter will be thin, but this is normal.
  5. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  7. To make the frosting, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing on low speed until combined.
  8. Add vanilla extract and heavy cream, then beat on high speed for about 3 minutes until fluffy.
  9. Once the cakes are completely cooled, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top, then place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
  10. Decorate with fresh strawberries or raspberries, chocolate shavings, and edible flowers as desired.
