Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, red food coloring, vanilla extract, and white vinegar until well combined.
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. To make the frosting, beat together the softened butter and cream cheese until creamy.
  9. Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing until combined. Add vanilla extract and a pinch of salt, then beat until fluffy.
  10. Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate and spread a generous amount of frosting on top.
  11. Place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
